PERIODONTICS
This involves treatment of diseases of the gums and associated soft tissues. More teeth are lost due to gum disease than any other cause, and it is vital that your gum health is checked regularly.
If dental plaque is allowed to build up round teeth, it causes inflammation of the gums. The plaque often hardens to become tartar(calculus), and as this extends under the gum, it destroys the bone support for the teeth. This leads to bleeding gums and eventually to spaces appearing between the teeth and mobility of the teeth.
Prevention is definitely better than the cure, and regular visits to the Dental Hygienist combined with a customised home care programme will help enormously. In patients with established gum disease, it will sometimes be necessary to see the hygienist several times to regain gum health. Additionally, we can speed up healing using carefully applied gels and home care with medicated mouthwashes.
