This is usually as a result of previous or active decay, but there are other reasons.
Once a tooth is infected like this, it is important to clean out all the bacteria using powerful antiseptics and special instruments.

This is sometimes carried out over two visits, and leaves the tooth nice and healthy, ready for filling with permanent antiseptic paste covered by a filling or crown.
